Prosthodontics is “the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of patients with clinical conditions associated  with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.” It can also be defined as, the branch of dentistry that deals with the replacement of missing teeth and the associated soft and hard tissues by prostheses (complete denture, Removable partial denture, crown &bridge) which may be fixed or removable or may be supported and retained by implants.

A prosthodontist is a specialist dentist who deals with the replacement of missing teeth and related mouth and jaws structures by bridges, dentures, and prostheses. They receive additional training of three years after B.D.S  to specialize in this field. 

Another important aspect of prosthodontics is Maxillofacial prosthetics, which is a highly specialized branch dealing with the rehabilitation of patients with congenital and acquired defects. This specialty also contributes significantly towards the management of Temporomandibular disorders.
